While email and social media are convenient ways to send season's greetings to our friends and loved ones, it just doesn't replace the thought and charm of opening the mailbox to see a stack of elaborate holiday cards. Part of the fun of receiving holiday cards is decorating with them, but it can go well beyond displaying them on the mantel. Here are a few ideas for decorating with holiday cards to give you a little inspiration.

Gilding The Lily

The bannister is an excellent canvas for crafted holiday decor. Those who have one near the front door can welcome guests with tinsel or evergreen garland weaving in and out of each post. To give the bannister a sentimental touch, attach your holiday cards to the garland. Punch a hole in the corner of a card and string it with ribbon to tie to the branch or tinsel. If garland is a bit too much for your style, you can always tie the ribbon directly to the post.

A Touch Of The Holidays

Everyday artwork doesn't quite have enough sparkle to carry it through to January, but you can change that with your holiday cards. Use your paintings or photographs as a base to create a collage for all of your holiday cards. If you want to protect the art, cut a piece of cardboard to fit within the boundaries of the frame, cover it with wrapping paper and affix it to the glass with a temporary adhesive. On top of the board, you create a collage to display your cards.

Holiday Sparkle

String lights + holiday cards = magic! There's so much you can do with string lights -- create holiday shapes on a blank wall and use binder clips to secure the cards in between the lights. You make a star, a candy cane or even a Christmas tree! If you don't have the design savvy to create shapes, you can still attach the cards to the light string, then position it around doorways and windows to shine a light on your greetings.

Keep It Simple

If you're not an expert decorator, you can add greeting card elegance to your home with just a little bit of ribbon and one or two craft supplies. Use hot glue to affix your cards vertically to a wide ribbon cut to match the length of a doorway. Make several of these, and you can add a little cheer to each of your interior doors or anywhere that needs a little cheer. For an even simpler idea, use a hole punch to make holes in the cards, then string then together to create an upcycled festoon. Keep the cards in place by tying knots in the ribbon where you want each card to sit. Festoons can be used to decorate cabinets, the mantel, windows, door frames, pianos -- anywhere that needs a little holiday pick-me-up.
